Costs
New bikes range from under £100 to over £1,000. Spend as much as you can afford, but ideally not less than £200 to ensure safety and minimum maintenance. Read more about cycle costs from the London Cycling Campaign website.Buying second-hand
Second hand cycles are a good option but make sure it is the correct size for you. Be wary of any deal that appears too good to be true - it could be stolen.
Children's bikes
Look for a good quality, durable frame that fits your child properly. Options for younger children include the following:- Front or rear mounted seats
- Trailers
- Dutch-style cargo bikes
- Tag-along bikes
- Tow bars for converting to trailer style
Cycle comfort
For maximum safety and comfort, get the right sized bike for your height. Ensure the saddle is the right height too. Ask a specialist bike shop for advice.
Clothing
No special clothing is required for cycling. However, the following can make cycling more comfortable:
- Shorts
Worn underneath normal clothing, or alone, lightly padded shorts can increase comfort, especially on longer distances. - Reflective strips
Wearing reflective clothing or strips will help you to be seen - especially at night or in poor weather conditions. - Gloves
Fingerless gloves can be worn in the summertime to reduce handle-bar friction. Choose wind-resistant gloves in cold weather.
Helmet
Consider wearing a helmet, and if worn choose one that fits properly. Tighten the straps so that the helmet doesn't move or slip when on.
