Euston Circus
Euston Circus is the junction of Euston Road, Tottenham Court Road, and Hampstead Road. The area is dominated by road traffic and large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists use the area.
With help from Camden borough, British Land and local stakeholders, we've created a design that will improve the junction for existing users and support anticipated growth in future years.
Proposed changes
We hope to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, while minimising the impact on traffic.
Changes include:- Simpler pedestrian routes between local attractions including the Tube station and hospitals
- Wider pavements
- Additional trees and landscaping improvements
- Junction resurfacing and modernised signals
- Simplified traffic movements through the junction
- Simpler and safer journey options for cyclists
- Enhanced contraflow cycle lane for cyclists travelling from east to west on Euston Road
- Future provision for southbound buses through the junction
Next steps
The consultation has now closed.
We are now considering all of the comments received and will publish the results when a decision has been made.
If the project goes ahead, we hope to start work in October 2012. Works will be contained to one area of the junction at a time, with works beginning on the northeast corner of the junction. The construction period is expected to last a year.
We'll make every effort to minimise the impact of the works by carrying out these works outside of busiest times.
Background
2003-2008
A partnership was set up between TfL, Camden, and British Land who developed a scheme to the preliminary design stage. The scheme was not progressed due to lack of funding.
2009-2010
A study was undertaken to investigate more affordable options. A preferred option was agreed with all partners and funding secured.
2011
Local stakeholders were approached for opinions and views to help shape the final design.
2012
The design will be completed and we'll appoint a contractor to start work in October 2012.
