Clean Air Fund
The majority of London already meets the European limit values for PM10 - a pollutant arising mostly from traffic emissions and a risk to health - but there are some local hotspots which could exceed the limit for daily average PM10.
Support from the Clean Air Fund allows us to introduce a range of targeted measures that could reduce local levels of PM10 by 10 to 20 per cent.
These include:
- Taxi marshalling at key ranks and priority areas in central London to promote eco driving and reduce engine idling
- An awareness and education initiative to deter unnecessary engine idling
- Expansion of a dust suppressants trial to reduce pollution on some of London's busiest roads
- Trials of green walls of plants known to trap pollution, including a 200 square metre green wall of 15 varieties of plants at Edgware Road station
- Installing diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to further reduce emissions from buses on selected routes - all buses already comply with the new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) standards
- Business support to increase sustainable transport and travel schemes
The Clean Air Fund is funded by the Department for Transport.
Other measures to tackle air pollution and reduce the risk to health include:
- Introducing age limits for taxi and private hire vehicles
- Investing in cleaner buses
- Record investment into cycling
- Tightening standards in the LEZ
